JUBA, SOUTH SUDAN— The Office of President Salva Kiir Mayardit has come to his defense as a leader of the liberation movement, urging critics of his administration to take their arguments directly to the people in the upcoming December 2026 elections.
This response from the presidency follows Vice President Rebecca Nyandeng de Mabior's public questioning of the nation’s political direction during the funeral of veteran politician Kosti Manibe Ngai just two days ago.
Nyandeng raised the question of who is currently “watching” over South Sudan, especially after the loss of several key figures from the liberation struggle.
While not naming Nyandeng directly, the presidency emphasized that the liberation effort was a team endeavor and dismissed the notion that the country’s leadership is confined to a select few individuals.
It underscored Kiir's long-standing involvement in the Sudan People's Liberation Movement and his leadership role since the passing of SPLM leader Dr. John Garang de Mabior in 2005.
Presidency Challenges Critics
The statement also pointed towards the upcoming elections in December, accusing some political figures of shifting their stances as the vote draws near.
The presidency asserted that those who feel the government has fallen short should make their case to the voters, while those advocating for political change need to mobilize and win over the electorate.
“The decision lies with the people — not with political elites, government roles, or political talk.”

In her earlier comments, Nyandeng expressed doubts about whether senior government officials are doing enough to enhance the lives of everyday South Sudanese citizens.
She also voiced worries about access to the president and the treatment of veterans from the liberation struggle.
